# Compact melee v2: shorter grips

2026-09-06. Built-in imagegen edit mode. User correction: shorten the knife HANDLE, the baton grips, and slightly shorten the remaining melee icons again. No Pawn, AMX, server or gameplay changes.

Active copies: `../3.png`, `../4.png`, `../5.png`, `../6.png`, `../9.png`. Previous versions remain in `../compact-melee/`; older long originals remain in `../*-long-v1.png`.

| ID | Current source | HUD diagonal span |

| 4 | 4.png | 0.78 |

The knife blade was preserved in this revision; only its handle was shortened. Tonfa main/side grips were shortened. Bat middle/grip, shovel shaft, and chainsaw cutting bar received modest additional shortening. Actual raster proportions changed through imagegen. CSS does not distort image aspect ratios. Span values retain approximately the previous visible thickness of each working part instead of stretching the shorter icon to fill the slot.

## Alpha preparation

The user previously approved programmatic background extraction in this ongoing icon workflow. Generated checkerboards were removed by `tmp/prepare-hud-cutout.ps1`, with 16px transparent outer border. Internal background seeds: shovel (350,445); chainsaw (235,575) and (810,290). Weapon geometry was not programmatically repainted.

Use case: precise-object-edit.
The supplied PNG is the exact current HUD icon to edit, NOT a style suggestion. Keep its smooth flat silver-white and neutral-gray game illustration, outline thickness, simple broad shading and exact horizontal side view, handle on LEFT and working end RIGHT. Make the requested part physically SHORTER, not a global resize, no crop, no squeeze of the entire object. Preserve the widths/thicknesses of all parts. Do not invent new parts or add textures. Keep a wide 2:1 canvas with the complete object centered and ample empty margins. Do not enlarge the result to refill the canvas. The HUD applies its diagonal orientation; do not rotate the source image. True transparent PNG alpha background, including internal handle holes; NO checkerboard, solid background, text, logos, hands, glow or outside shadow.
Shorten the main LEFT wrapped hand grip by about 25%, and shorten the downward perpendicular side grip by about 20%, keeping both grip diameters, rounded caps and structure. Also shorten the long straight striking shaft to the RIGHT by only about 8%. Keep a recognizable police tonfa, not a hammer; the right striking arm remains long relative to the compact grips. Change lengths only, not thickness.
```
The first result retained overlong grips. Final refinement of `exec-525c174c-00aa-40b0-b73c-b1b2dedcdf82.png`:
```text
Use case: precise-object-edit. Fix ONLY the TWO GRIPS of this exact police tonfa PNG. The main horizontal left grip is visibly too long: shorten the whole section from the LEFT end cap to the start of the silver striking arm by 30%, reducing four broad grip panels to THREE equally thick panels; keep grip DIAMETER the same. The perpendicular downward side handle is also too long: shorten ONLY its wrapped vertical grip section by 25%, reducing four grip panels to THREE; keep its diameter and its bottom rounded cap the same. Move both grip caps toward their attachment points. IMPORTANT: keep the long silver RIGHTWARD striking arm unchanged in length, width and exact rounded shape. Do not shorten that arm again. Do not uniformly scale or resize the image. Physically shorter grips with same thickness. Preserve horizontal composition, flat silver-white and gray HUD illustration, simple shading and outline. Complete icon centered on same wide 2:1 canvas. True transparent PNG alpha background, no checkerboard, no white background, no text.

Shorten ONLY the knife's grooved gray HANDLE from pommel to guard by about 30%. The grip currently looks too long, almost blade length. It should become a compact natural grip, about 60% of the blade length. Move the pommel closer to the guard and redraw the grooves naturally along this shorter handle. Preserve the entire blade, blade tip, blade width, fuller groove and crossguard exactly. Do NOT shorten the blade again; this correction is specifically to the HANDLE. Keep the grip as thick as it is now.

Make this bat just a little more compact again: shorten the wrapped handle by about 18%, and the long tapered middle section by about 10%. Preserve the width and rounded silhouette of the striking end, the grip thickness and the knob shape. Only modest extra shortening, not a tiny club.

Shorten ONLY the straight shaft between the D hand grip and spade head by a further 18%. Preserve the entire D-shaped hand grip and entire broad spade head exactly in size and shape. Keep the shaft thickness unchanged. Do not shorten or shrink the spade head. The shovel should be slightly more compact again, not a trowel.

Shorten only the cutting bar and chain to the RIGHT of the engine by a further 15%. Keep the entire engine body, rear handle, front loop and hand guard EXACTLY the same size and shape. Preserve the rounded chain-bar tip and clear chain teeth. Do not shrink the whole chainsaw.

## Verification

`node tmp/test-hud-icon-sizing.cjs`: PASS, 23 icons at 1366x768, 1920x1080, 390x844, 320x568. Verified visible-alpha bounds, centering, diagonal direction, aspect ratio, no overlap/clipping, stable HUD layout, cache, rapid switches, custom uploads and fallback. HUD screenshots visually reviewed for all five updated icons. Minimap unchanged.
